Astigmatism is a condition of the eyes that causes multiple focus points that result in distorted vision. The eyes fail to focus light correctly, which produces blurriness in the image. Astigmatism is a result of an irregularly shaped cornea. Instead of a normal round shape, the cornea is more of a football shape, and because of this irregularity, the light cannot focus along the corneal meridians onto a single point. The distortion can be severe enough to cause significant problems seeing, driving, working and enjoying recreational activities. A number of remedies are available to reduce the distorted vision from astigmatism.

Vitamin Supplements

Supplementing the amount of vitamin C and vitamin E can help to strengthen eye muscles and improve your vision. Ensuring that you take at least 75 to 90 milligrams of vitamin C each day will help to increase antioxidants in the body and reduce free radicals that can affect vision. Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant that also reduces the free radicals to improve eye health. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoid antioxidants that have been found to correct vision conditions.

Herbal Supplements

A number of natural herbs can also be used to help strengthen eye health and reduce astigmatism. Wolfberry is a Chinese herb that has medicinal properties that can be used to improve eye muscle strength and visual acuity. Bilberry, gingko biloba, gentian root, pine bark extract and grapeseed extract can all be used to improve eye health and stop the progression of astigmatism.

Eye Exercises

Because astigmatism is a result of the irregular shape of the cornea and the way that light is refracted, some experts believe that exercises can help the eye muscles to compensate for the problem to allow clear vision. These exercises involve determining the dominant eye and exercising the non-dominant eye to improve muscle function and the ability of the eyes to focus more efficiently. Exercises involve rapid changing from close vision to far vision, covering one eye to improve muscle strength in the other and rolling the eyes in a circular motion to improve full use of the field of vision.

Vision Correction

If other remedies do not produce sufficient improvement in the astigmatism, an eye care professional, like those at All About Eyes, can provide corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses to reduce the vision distortion. Eye surgeons can also offer refractive surgery to correct the distortion, so that individuals can see clearly without the need for corrective lenses.

If you have vision blurring and distortion as a result of astigmatism, try these vision remedies to help you see more clearly and with greater acuity.
